Sometimes the so-called urine crystals accumulate in the inside of the ostomy bag, but also around the stoma. This may irritate the stoma and cause bleeding. The cause of the formation of these crystals is usually alkaline urine.
Therefore, it is important to maintain the acidity of the urine (unless your doctor advises you otherwise). This can be achieved by a sufficient daily fluid intake. An adequate fluid intake will also reduce the risk of developing urinary infections.
Be sure to consult your doctor about how much water you should drink daily, as the amount may vary from person to person, depending on several factors such as age and gender.
How to remove urine crystals?
If this is the first time you have noticed urine crystals on or around your urostomy, it is best to contact your stoma nurse and seek advice.
