OSTOMY AND MAIN TYPES OF STOMA
The reasons for ostomy may vary from person to person. However, ostomy is always a process that seeks to save people’s lives or alleviate a person’s serious health problems.
The three most common types of stoma as a result of the ostomy procedure are: ileostomy, colostomy and urostomy.
COLOSTOMY
If you have a colostomy, this means that your large intestine is derived to the abdominal cavity in the shape of an opening, temporarily or permanently. It is called colostomy after a combination of the word colon and the Greek word for opening (stoma).
Colostomy is the new end of your digestive system through which digested food will come out.
This is why you will use an ostomy system that includes a stool collection bag. The colossom with one end is also called the final colostomy. If you have the so -called loop stoma, this means that part of your colon is performed on the abdominal surface and is divided into two connected parts by a cut.
This type of stoma is often temporary, but it is necessary to use an ostomy system for it nonetheless.
ILEOSTOMY
If you have a standard ileostomy, this means that your small intestine is derived to the abdominal cavity in the form of an opening called stoma. It is called ileostomy after ileum, which is the name of the end of the small intestine and the Greek word stoma which means “opening”.
The stoma is the end of your functional digestive system through which the stool will come out.
As you can no longer control your digestion as before the ostomy, you will need an ostomy system that includes a bag to collect the stool.
Ileostomy with one end is also called end ileostomy. If you have the so-called loop stoma, this means that a part of your small intestine is derived to the abdominal surface and is divided into two connected parts.
UROSTOMY
Is a surgically performed opening on the abdomen which releases urine. Unlike the previous two types of stoma, which affect the digestive system, urostomy is specific in that it is an operation affecting the urinary system.
There are several types of urostomy surgeries. The most common way is across the segment of the small intestine. The doctor separates a part of your small intestine, while the rest of the intestine is connected and it can still function normally.
Ureters are connected to the separated part — a segment of the small intestine.
One end of the segment is closed, and the other on the abdomen forms a urostomy.
This opening is called urostomy after the Greek words for urine (ouron) and opening (stoma). This is the same way in which a stoma from the segment of the colon is made.
The key difference from the time before the procedure is that now your urine is no longer collected in the bladder, but goes directly out of your body through the urinary tubes and the stoma. Since you cannot control urination, you will use an ostomy system that includes a urine collection bag.
